An ultrasonic flow meter is a device used to measure the flow rate of liquids in a pipe using high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasonic Flow Meter Working Principle

The difference in transit time is proportional to the velocity of the fluid, allowing the instrument to calculate the flow rate accurately.

This method is commonly used for clean liquids.

2. Doppler Principle

The Doppler method is used when the fluid contains suspended particles or air bubbles.

In this method, ultrasonic waves are transmitted into the flowing liquid. When the waves reflect from moving particles or bubbles, their frequency changes due to the Doppler effect. The frequency shift is proportional to the velocity of the particles in the fluid, allowing the flow meter to determine the flow rate.

This method is suitable for:

  • Wastewater
  • Slurry
  • Dirty liquids

Types of Ultrasonic Flow Meters

Ultrasonic flow meters are available in several installation types:
Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Clamp-on sensors are mounted on the outside of the pipe, allowing flow measurement without cutting the pipe or stopping the process.
Inline Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Inline ultrasonic flow meters are installed directly in the pipeline and provide higher measurement accuracy.
Insertion Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Insertion sensors are installed through the pipe wall and are commonly used for large-diameter pipelines.
